UEKI Soetsu (1896-1982)
UEKI Soetsu was born in Hakodate in 1896.
He started to learn art when he was a student. Then he studied painting techniques and entered his works in art exhibitions while working as a customs officer.
After retiring from customs in 1933, he was devoted to painting. He painted many paintings and showed them at exhibitions. In 1982, he died of a disease at the age of eighty six.
He used to say "I paint paintings only for myself." He never sold his paintings. As a result, he led a poor life, but he was loved and respected by many people.
The motif underlying most of his works is "Kappa", an imaginary creature living at the water's edge, which appears in old legends of Japan. UEKI Soetsu kept on depicting the warmth and tenderness of life, as well as distress and sadness in real society, in his paintings through the imaginary creature "Kappa".
